What is Geocoding Lat/Long Appending?
Geocoding is the process of assigning latitude and longitude coordinates to an existing address. The accuracy of the coordinates depends upon the initial accuracy of the address. This is why Global Locator cleanses, validates, and standardizes all addresses before assigning the latitude and longitude coordinates to them. Our address cleansing differentiates Global Locator from other geocoding solutions.
Is all geocoding data the same?
No. Geocoding data is categorized by how it is extracted and its overall accuracy to match to a specific address. There are three primary levels of geocoded data available:
• Pure rooftop—Matches a validated address to exact rooftop lat/long coordinates. This data has limited availability.
• Interpolated rooftop—An estimated building location is derived by examining the number ranges of a specific street segment. For example, if a street section includes number 1-100 on one side, then #25 would be approximately a quarter of the way down the street.
• Centroids—A process that estimates an address’ corresponding geocode based upon the center point of a geographic location. Centroid accuracy decreases as the geographic region increases in size. There are four primary levels of centroid data:
• Street level
• Postcode
• City
• Region
